Shadow and Bone follows the journey of Alina, a young girl who was orphaned at an early age and is now a soldier. When the life of Mal, the boy she has grown up with and loves dearly is threatened, Alina unleashes a power, magic she did not know she had.Because of this newfound magic she is taken to the home of the Grisha, who are made up of people with magic and special skills. She meets the mysterious Darkling who is convinced Alina can help save them all and win this war.I feel like this is an intriging book. The world building is very detailed and I will admit I did feel a touch of confusion at times near the beginning, but that is the case often if I am reading a series with a huge created world. It takes a while for me to envision it all in a way that makes sense to me.Alina is a character that has struggled and there are things in her I can relate to.I am a sucker for the bad boy in fiction so it wasn't a surprise to me that I developed a soft spot for the Darkling. I don't agree with things he did at all, but there were moments that I really fell under his spell. It took me a little while to really get into this one, but once I did I enjoyed lots of things about it. I liked the characters and how Alina grows as a person through the story. I am really intrigued to see what happens in the rest of the trilogy. I think things will get interesting as the story continues. I'm curious what will happen in terms of the story's romance. I was drawn to the idea of Alina and the Darkling. I thought it would be similar to the romance in the ACOTAR series, but given Darkling's actions in the last section of this book I now doubt things will take that path.If you like stories with lots of layers and imaginative world building then I think you would like this one.

So this book series has been turned into a netflix series which is probably where most people have heard it from, however, I did read this prior to the series being released. I decided to give it a reread after watching the first season, it is a little different to the series as two book series are merged into one tv show, so some of the elements and characters such as Kaz aren't featured in shadow and bone as they are part of the six of crows series instead. With that being said, this book was very well written and the plot takes a few twists that you don't really expect where some of them are more expected, there is a lot of depth to each of the characters and as you read on the plot does thicken and is left on a cliff hanger making you want the next book.

I went into this with really low expectations after seeing a couple of other BookTokers say that they were underwhelmed.I just enthralled with Bardugo’s story telling and struggled to do anything else but read this.Alina was a complex character I enjoyed getting to know, with the wit and sarcasm I use on a regular basis, so maybe part of my enjoyment was that I related to her quite a lot. Mal on the other hand felt like he started off as a character that I would adore and became one I didn’t really care about (regardless of Alinas’s feelings). The Darkling on the other hand. Is he morally grey? Probably not. The brooding, dark haired character I fall for every single time. Awful awful actions but my god is he someone I would fall in love with (ignoring all the red flags of course). The world building was easy to follow and I’m excite... More

The Netflix show is much, much better and improves the story. But still I'm glad the book exists otherwise the show wouldn't. The writing is very simple.

‘The servants called them malenchki, little ghosts, because they were the smallest and the youngest, and because they haunted the Duke’s house like giggling phantoms,’Despite the immense popularity of these books and its adaptation last year this is somehow my first time reading anything set within the Grishaverse and I honestly don’t know how. Surprisingly it’s not my first novel by the author though – I’m probably one of the few readers who managed to pick up her unrelated books before getting to Leigh Bardugo’s major series. And why exactly? I honestly don’t have the faintest clue. I’ve been wanting – and meaning – to read these books for years now I just never got around to it. But thank goodness that I finally have because I adored them. I honestly did devour around about ninety percent of this boo... More
