Having been the only survivor of a shipwreck, the seafarer Robinson Crusoe is fated to live a solitary life on an uninhabited island. Unable to reconcile with his situation in the beginning, he gradually learns to live with it. He builds himself a house, learns to cultivate, and develops the necessary skills to live a precarious existence. He longs to see a human face and wishes to be rescued but this will be a long wait. Written in 1719, Robinson Crusoe is one of the first novels in the English language and arguably the flagbearer of the realistic fiction genre. It also enjoys the distinction of being the most reprinted novel in history. Although a simple adventure story, it continues to captivate its readers even three hundred years after its first publication.

… I had trouble staying engaged during last half of the journal section and therefore didn’t finish. However, I enjoyed the first half.

Not for children only. Holds up for adults as well. The classics have a way of staying with you. All hail Dafoe

It's a timeless story that needs no new reviews. However, the white stuff on the book starts coming off on day one. It flakes and gets everywhere. Anytime I pick up this book I'm left with white flakes stuck to my hands and have to wash them vigorously to remove the flakes. My clothing and everything around me ends up covered in white flakes. Do not buy this version of the book, or any other Penguin Cloth book.

Having only known the movie version of the story, I didn’t understand why this was a such a good story. Now, I actually read the book, and I understand. A great yarn told in a fascinating old-school way. Delightful read!

Excellent book overall, but for my preference spent too much time with minusia. He definitely has a knack for keeping ones attention though. A minor critique: the writer assumes the reader knows all the technical terms of sailing ships/boating; obviously not everyone does.

I'd only ever read the edited for children version before, and boy was the original edition a surprise... I was absolutely unprepared for the constant racist, xenophobic and toxically religious rants. I really can't reccomend this book to ANYONE except as an example of how far humanity at large has come in terms of not being hateful closeminded jerks. Stick with the edited edition.

Absolutely a classic and worth reading. I found it very difficult to put down. Full of life lessons as well. Enjoy!

A classic and epic adventure. Very much a product of the time, especially culturally, having been written and published over 300 years ago in 1719 by Daniel Defoe, a prolific London author. The style of prose certainly speaks to this timeframe, as well as Defoe's own style. Many consider the style stilted, and that, along with run-on sentences, etc., may make this epic approachable by some, but if you can look past that, you'll find this to be a grand adventure!

Robinson Crusoe is a true classic. To those who speak colloquial English ,it is a challenge. Growing up I thought that Robinson Crusoe was the story about a person marooned on an island with his trusty companion, Friday. Imagine my surprise when I found out that after they left the island there was still 54%of the book left to read.

I am not a reader, at least until I reached the age of 70. Robinson Crusoe knew he was a sailing adventurist from a very young age. I never realize the adventures I could go on through books like this until late in life!

I just read this classic of classics and while I'd tried many times to finish it, this time I had success. It was a really good read and has a lot more to say about things than the survival narrative would suggest. Take for example, Crusoe's relationship with Friday. Crusoe himself was enslaved in northern Africa in the beginning of the book, and he takes a slave there called Xury, who helps Crusoe out quite a bit and at the end of their journey together, Crusoe sells him back into slavery. Flash forward, Crusoe's on the island, for 20 odd years and he enslaves Friday. If Crusoe is a stand-in for Western Civilization and Friday (Crusoe refers to him as a cannibal) is the 'other' there is a lot being said there. In addition, Crusoe teaches Friday English and converts him to Christianity. There are many more themes (religion, economics, the e... More

I liked the story and after I got a little acquainted with the word choice, I was able to easily pick up on what the author was conveying. Some part are a bit long and drawn out, but in all this book is a good read.
