Jane Eyre

This is my favourite book so i though i would purchase this lovely edition. The cover is beautiful and looks great on my bookshelf.

A Good Gift

I downloaded this on my kindle and I am glad I did. It is a classic piece of literature and the language used in it made me glad I had downloaded the dictionary app.

Jane Eyre is written as a very independent girl, not afraid to say what she thinks and determined not to be ruled by a husband. Very unusual for the time but Charlotte Bronte was clearly an early advocate of equality for women. Probably did not go down well in the 1840s, especially with men who expected women to stay at home, look after the children and spend their time on household tasks and embroidery etc. I have enjoyed reading this with a different perspective from when I read it at school many years ago.

Having reached 40 without reading this widely recognised novel, I thought it about time. Wow, it is the most miserable of tales and of characters that I've ever encountered. Did someone check if Charlotte Brontë was ok?? What a sorry life she must have led to create such a story, and some based on her own experiences. It was my own stubbornness in wanting to tick this book off that I continued, but regularly questioned why I would do this to myself. The characters' love story is unfathomable - they are both quite unlikeable and why they fancied each other a match, I do not know. And even when they could have happiness, before the big lunatic reveal to Jane, they were both still miserable at their own doing. There are many lengthy stretches of this misery being played out - you just pray for some relief from it... More

The book is indeed a pleasure to look at with beautifully designed and sturdy covers, gold trimmed pages. These books will probably last a lifetime. This book is also quite heavy. They have no notes of any kind for the reader.

i lost my own book over the years so was very pleased to get this on my kindle at such a low price, brings back memories.

I have largely tended to read non-fiction books for many years, but, tired of Hollywood’s never ending anti Christian agenda, I decided to start reading fiction again for relaxation. I didn’t want to read any modern literature, and so have started to read the classics. They are classics for a reason, and many of them, unlike modern entertainment, have a strong Christian theme. Jane Eyre certainly does. And the characters are all presented brilliantly, so that you get to know their strengths and weaknesses intimately. A real joy to read. I’m only sad I can’t ever read it for the first time again.

This is a classic and a very well written one! If you haven't yet read anything written by Charlotte Brönte I recommend this book to begin with. I am sure you will love it and get absorbed inside the world of Jane Eyre!
