Dostoyevsky's great novel of damnation and redemption evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur. It tells the story of Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, who wanders through the slums of St Petersburg and commits a random murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be beyond conventional moral laws. But as he embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a police investigator, Raskolnikov is pursued by the growing voice of his conscience and finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck.

Suddenly you want to read Crime and Punishment (everything in Dostoevsky happens suddenly), and that’s a good idea. This novel is on most lists of the greatest 1001 books, 100 books, 50 books, and for good reasons. Constance Garnet deserves gratitude from all of us readers. She did an amazing amount of work translating Russian literature into English. She translated nearly all of the important novels, and that’s amazing. That said, the time has come to turn to other translators. Garnet was great for her time, but she censored some parts of Dostoevsky, and her language fails to bring Dostoevsky into out time. Nearly any other modern translation will yield a more satisfying experience for the today’s reader.

Spend a little more and get a better quality version of this book. I’m on page 12 and the pages are just falling out every time I turn the page. Junk.

Very readable, well executed tale of a man who did the unthinkable during a time of immense stress and his journey of atonement. Relatable and conveys the culture of the time. One feels the angst.

Listed as “very good” condition, but “acceptable” or “okay” would be more applicable. It is in one piece, but quite bent up and a bit worn.

It's good. Really, really good. I didn't think I was going to like Crime and Punishment, but here we are. I love it. The twists and turns. The people you cheer for. The villains. The people you don't know if you like them or not. The characters are flawed. You love them one minute and can't stand them the next. One minute you don't know if you're going to cheer on the main character or hope he gets caught. And the ending is just about a perfect ending you could ever ask for in a book. Highly recommended!
