This is not my favorite book by Dickens, but it is definitely towards the top of my list. I taught it to 7th graders many years ago. They hated it, and actually so did I. As a very mature adult now, however, I have rediscovered the joys of Dickens. The characters in this book, like all of Dickens books are so very memorable. Who would not be astounded to come into Miss Havisham's home where life has stopped the day she was left at the altar so many years ago. And, how could you not wonder at the cruelty and arrogance of Estella, encouraged by Miss Havisham to despise and hurt men? Is there anywhere a more loyal and good man that Joe Gargery? He never complains about his complaining and nagging wife, but is as steady a friend as anyone could want. Pip meets so many interesting and unique individuals... More

Bought for someone and they said they can’t read it because the font is so tiny. Save yourself the trouble and pay more for a better edition. Not worth it.

Great Expectations is extremely well constructed story from the master story teller of all time. Some of the most memorable characters appear here. Pip observes a harrowing prisoner escape, has great expectations, leaves home, almost becomes a gentleman, gets the shock of his life when the patron is not who he expected. Then he sets out on a poorly planned escape caper with the patron which results in some tragedy but at least a happy ending. The legal experts are classics also. Two men work together for decades and keep their personal, marital, and family lives perfectly segmented from work. Of course since this is Dickens we have several w... More

This edition features what seems to be an 8 or 9 point typeset, with lines set very closely upon each other. It's difficult to read. I work with 10 point font all the time, and 10 point is fairly small. The font size in this book is ridiculous. Someone tried to cram 500 pages into 380. I would pay twice as much for a decently formatted version.

English classes in school (and my English prof mom) only taught modern literature (except Shakespeare), so since then I have been reading the great classics. I had tried to read this a few years ago after having loved David Copperfield and A Christmas Carol, but stopped after a few chapters because I didn't like the gloomy, dark tone. I've read Dickens' other big works since then, and decided that I just had to finish this one because it's considered to be his magnum opus. I came into this book knowing absolutely nothing about the characters or plot, and I'm glad I did, because I was in store for some suprises. I slogged through the first part, enjoyed the second part, and abs... More
