The million-copy bestseller, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, is an immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and the limits of human endurance.

When four graduates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they're broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. It is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their center of gravity. Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he'll not only be unable to overcome but that will define his life forever.

Heard so much rubbish about this book, told not to read it as it’s so upsetting and should never have been written.Yes I cried like a baby at the end of this book, because it was the most emotional I have ever been in 40 years of reading books. Outstanding writing…. SpeechlessHowever,We really need to climb outside our peachy PC lives and experience the lives of others only then have we truly got anything to moan about. A little life is a story but it’s real, people live life’s like these guys and no amount of ignorance should ever stop anyone wanting to read and experience the reality of hard living. No one should be told to not read this book.Get over yourself and anyone who moans about this book.Vast majority of people will read this book and be forever self aware, knowing and loving of a life that is only sometimes hard and with the words of A little life on your mind, be grateful the hardest part of your day is deciding if you should read a book.An outstanding view on human nature, we can be our own worse enemies and the self talk, the way we see the world can be overtaken by how we think. It’s not easy to break, to not easy or simple but happens to millions of people. People are living like this everyday and we need to be aware, living in 21st century is about more, being more than a hashtag.Understanding that life is not a rollercoaster it can be a absolute nightmare and Hanya Yanagihara writing is breathtaking. Yes this book made me so mad because characters were horrid to others. This book made me so sad that I felt changed. Some call this triggering for me I call this reality check. People suffer with their own minds and we need to know about all areas of life and living to truly embrace life.

I really don’t know where to begin. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it.For me personally it didn’t live up to all the hype and reviews I read about this one. I found it really hard to get into, it was kind of like ‘pulling teeth’.There were elements of the book I enjoyed, where it’s focus was on Jude, who clearly had lived a tragic life. It was just a rollercoaster and not one of emotions for me, but more boring sections then gripping sections of the storyline, it was really 300/400 pages too long and for me I just don’t get why it was dragged out, it didn’t impact me by doing so.I feel like I must be numb from emotions cos I note everyone had said they really struggled and need that emotional support, I for some reason didn’t feel those emotions. There were some characters I could take or leave but Williem and Harold really had my heart they showed such grave and unconditional love towards Jude it was captivating.Buy Jude was my favourite. Learning about his past and the impact it had on his future, was very sad. I think he showed so much strength and braver and strived very hard to turn his life around. I think we all resonate with Jude in some way as we have all experienced some trauma in our lives maybe not to this extent for some, but either way it is still trauma. What really struck me though was his friendships and I was in awe, it was nice to read about male friendships and how they really looked out for each other. The bond they had even when their friendships were tested was really profound. I also loved how much they respect Jude and never pushed him to talk about his past, his origin or his disability.Insta @who_gives_a_book

WOW there are no other words. A little life is a life changing book, I have read this book 3 times now as there is so much to take in. It is utterly devastating what poor Jude had to go through not just as a child but as a grown man. The first time I read this book it took me 2 weeks not because I couldn't get into it but because I had to keep putting it down due to pure heart ache and tears it caused. Although it is an utterly heartbreaking story it is also beautiful it is the best book I have ever read and would recommend to everyone.10/10

One of the most beautiful yet heartbreaking reads I’ve ever read in my life. So detailed in the complexities of human relationships but with such dedication. A truly literary masterpiece.

I was sucked into the hype and couldn’t even get past page 40. Lots of people loved it but I really struggled to get into it. Also, HUGE.

This book was recommended to me and I am so glad I listened and bought it. This book is hauntingly beautiful, devastating in parts and heartbreaking in others. My heart ached for Jude so many times. This is one of those stories you want to keep reading, but are almost afraid to because of what may be revealed next. This story will live with you as it will with me.

This is the first book I have read that has stayed with me so prominently. An outstanding novel that I recommend to everyone (18 ) to read.Jude's friendships and the lives that he has impacted are the basis of the novel; the character development is excellent and I felt a whole range of emotions reading this book, beyond anything I have ever read, which is testament to Yanagihara's skill as a writer. However, yes, it is extremely difficult to read in places. Certain scenes in this book are probably some of the most horrifying that I have ever read and I admit I had to put the book down at times and come back to it a few days later, but to dismiss this novel because of those scenes it to misunderstand it. This book is about the tragedy of life, but also the little pockets of happiness and love that can shine through, if only we... More

One of, if not the best book I have ever ever read.A lot to get through, and some very disturbing story lines which are hard (but so important) to read.Finished it and cried for half an hour afterwards. So well written and absolutely heartbreaking. Can't recommend enough, absolutely crucial reading.

Really not an enjoyable read for me. In fact completely depressing. If you want inspired by a story of overcoming adversity, this is not it.
