Ten Maps that tell you everything your need to know about global politics - the million-copy international bestseller

Geography shapes not only our history but where we're headed...

ON THE RUSSIA/UKRAINE CRISIS - What is driving Russia's foreign policy? Why do Putin's actions mirror those made in the past?
Prisoners of Geography analyses the geographic weaknesses and historical invasions of Russia's territories, exploring how they have ultimately shaped the decisions of its leaders past and present.

All leaders are constrained by geography. Their choices are limited by mountains, rivers, seas, and concrete. Yes, to follow world events you need to understand people, ideas, and movements - but if you don't know geography, you'll never have the full picture.

If you've ever wondered why Putin is so obsessed with Crimea, why the USA was destined to become a global superpower, or why China's power base continues to expand ever outwards, the answers are all here.

In ten chapters and ten maps, Prisoners of Geography looks at the past, present, and future to offer an essential insight into one of the major factors that determine world history.

It's time to put the 'geo' back into geopolitics.

'Like having a light shone on your understanding... I can't think of another book that explains the world situation so well.
 - Nicolas Lezard, Evening Standard

'Sharp insights into the way geography shapes the choices of world leaders.' - Gideon Rachman, Financial Times

Ten maps; ten chapters:

Russia * China * the United States of America * Latin America * the Middle East * Africa * India and Pakistan * Europe * Japan and Korea * the Arctic

In his gripping new book The Future of Geography: How Power and Politics in Space Will Change Our World, Marshall digs deep into the past, present, and future of the new ‘astropolitics’ that is set to change the face of life on Earth.

Enjoyed the read but, literally, every time I turned a page, it fell out. So I am now the proud owner of a front and back cover. Very easy to carry around, but not very conducive to a good read, anymore.

Fantastic book. Up there with Sapiens and a Brief History of Nearly Everything. If you like this; also try Factfulness.

This book brings home how hampered some countries are by their mountains and rivers, access to the sea and other factors. I don't agree with all the conclusions, though, eg, does geography justify Russia seizing Ukraine because of its paranoia about invasion by land? Of course not. Still, a thought provoking read.

Love his analysis. Better map would be a minor quibble.

An interesting view of the way the world is and a somewhat scary view of what the future holds (especially knowing some of the world’s leading politicians now (2022)).

This book presents in a clear in concise way a new perspective to understand why civilisations, “countries” (the quotes are explained in the book) are what they are and how they became to be what they are. Highly recommended.

As title says - book sturdiness was sub-par. Book itself is a good read.

I went into this nothing basically nothing about geopolitics. I found this a very good introduction and summary. It’s clear, concise, and has many maps as a useful point of reference.

Tim Marshall is a former BBC and Sky journalist and his explanation about the land restrictions, politics and economics about land around the world is in my view excellent. His writing and explanations are clear and enjoyable to read. Yes, he cannot cover ever aspect of the world but his book is a great prompter to read more widely and acquire deeper knowledge. I enjoyed the analysis of India, Pakistan, Russia and China. This is great value for 320 pages.Tony Laforce, Hackney
