The poignant and fascinating story of a young man who is caught between the breakup of the traditions of a northern Japanese aristocratic family and the impact of Western ideas.

Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life even while he feels incapable of understanding human beings. Oba Yozo's attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a "clown" to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness.

No Longer Human has been adapted as a graphic novel by horror manga artist Junji Ito, made into an anime film, Human Lost, directed by Fuminori Kizaki, and is the name of ability in the manga series Bungo Stray Dogs used by a character named after Dazai."

Very good story. Translators note felt a bit dodge tho so u might as well skip that bit. Lots of misogynistic comments in the book if ur uncomfortable with that but it comes from a narrator whos thoughts are supposed to be seen as flawed so i dont think it makes the narrative worse off for it

This is such a well written book, i can’t begin to describe how good this book is in terms of describing what it feels like to feel alienated. It touches on very sensitive topics so don’t read this if you get triggered easily. For me it was quite draining to read because it’s quite depressing tbh but i love it nevertheless!

Truly a tragic novel when considering the life that Osamu Dazai had. This is a literary classic nonetheless

I’m happy to read books which reflect the angst of the human condition and I don’t need happy endings. I love Japanese fiction and had high hopes for this book. But I really don’t understand the accolades. I found the subject such a deeply damaged human being that although I could identify to some extent with his fear of people his mental state was so extreme that I found myself getting bored. A wretched character who deserves understanding and compassion but also psychiatric help. Depressing rather than enlightening.

I discovered the anime based on this book a while back. I didn't quite like the animation, and intrigued by the beginning of the story I thought of buying this.I just finished reading this now. I am sad.Sad for the life Yozo went through, sad for the lives negatively impacted by him, sad of the way the story developed.I don't know exactly what connection really is between Dazai and the story in this book, but I'm going to look it up now online.I recommend it, but be prepared to be shocked and angered.
