It contains 11 stories all of which appeared in the Strand Magazine in 1892-83. Conan Doyle actually meant it to be the last volume of Holmes works which is why he got him killed by Moriarty in The Final Problem, the last short story in the collection. However, Holmes had grown to be larger than life by then and he had to resurrect him in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Following The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes Conan Doyle further published two novels and three collections of short stories featuring Holmes and Watson.
