The English Language In Pakistan
The world-wide spread of English is unprecedented. No other language in history has been used by more people in more places than English is used today. Accompanying this spread, however, there has also been a diversification of the forms of English. Recognized varieties of English now exist not only in countries where the language is a "mother-tongue", but also in former British and US colonies throughout Africa, Asia and the Americas where it functions as a second language. One such variety is Pakistani English. In its present context of use, English in Pakistan has assimilated diverse linguistic features which reflect the multilingual, multi-cultural character of the language's "new" South Asian home. The present volume brings together essays by leading scholars on historical, sociological, pedagogical and linguistic perspectives of the English language in Pakistan.
