This is not just a dictionary, and there are many more words defined in an ordinary large dictionary than there are entries in this one. The difference lies in the variety of proper names of note and specific items and events not covered in a standard dictionary; all the entries here have "a tale to tell" - the words of the revising editor Ivor H Evans.
It should be used in conjunction with standard dictionaries and encyclopaedias since it does not try to replace the function of either, rather it is intended to fill in the gaps in our daily usage left by those more conventional references. It is a hard-cover book with a proper stitched binding and clearly intended to survive intensive use.
I was not aware of it before being given this copy for a Christmas present, but since then I have found it to be surprisingly useful to help with clarifying English usage for writing and as a sideways look at our culture for crossword puzzles. But more than this it can be quite interesting just to dip into as an occasional browse to pass a few minutes, because there is always some quirky phrase I'd not come across before that suddenly seems so obvious after reading about it in here.
My 1977 Centenary Edition copy is not particularly up-to-date for the twenty-first century, and there are later more relevant editions available, which is why it loses a star. But I would not be without it.

This Kindle version is an appallingly bad OCR-scanned version of an older version of the book. It's very poorly done, containing myriad errors on every page, thus completely defeating the purpose of Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. An official version would be welcomed, but this is a travesty.

I do not expect to like one hundred percent of each book I purchase, nor do I read the entire book; however, a book like this is a good reference/search source. I give it five stars for what the book accomplished, not for what I did not find.

Thank goodness for Kindle free samples!
Given the extortionate price asked for the Kindle version of this book (£132.06 would you believe), you would think they could have afforded a proofreader! Instead, they clearly scanned the book and put it for sale without further effort. Reading the free sample I discovered that this book is called "BEEWEE'S DIOTIOMEY OF PHMSES AND FABLE". The introduction lists earlier word-studies "admitted as wahiuts for after dinner": these include Ducange's SoraoflTO. The errors go on and on: kindhness, good-humour?smdi, hick the bucket, poUte refusal, objeot, AdiMamUes, all within a couple of pages. What a farce!

Excellent! Delivery was on the first day of expected time slot and the book, although described as 'used', was in fact in mint condition? One VERY satisfied customer!!!💝

I love old books and this is none of those. Hundreds of people before me have opened it and looked through its pages.
A good place for looking up older and some arcane words.

The full version of this edition of Brewer's is available free online (public domain), and in PDF format comes in at well over 900 pages (I believe close to 1,000). This abridged print edition has 876 pages. I cannot determine who edited this version, and no date of publication for the original full material can be found (in the online or this print edition), but it was no earlier than 1951, and no later than 1971. I established this because I quickly found a 1951 date for an event in the past tense in the book, but Memorial Day is not listed as the last Monday in May, and that was established by federal law in 1971.
Every entry I checked in the print version is an exact copy of what you'll find in the public domain... More
