I had heard of Thomas Harris, and I have seen Silence of the Lambs multiple times (who hasn’t?), but it wasn’t until I started watching the Hannibal TV show that I decided I had better read the source material. Silence of the Lambs, the film, was gloomy and gritty, while the TV show Hannibal, which focused on the character of Will Graham, was stylistically indulgent in so many artsy and pompous ways that I was left to wonder which type of book did Harris write to begin the series? After finishing Red Dragon in a single week, I am very happy to find out that Harris wrote a moody, gloomy and realistic story without all the gratuitous culinary and artistic stylings of the TV show. This novel is so well written, so intriguing, and paced so well. I truly believe this to be Thomas Harris' magnum opus.

Thomas Harris is a brilliant author, and Hannibal Lector has stolen my interest even from the brief bit he shows up in Red Dragon.

This book has totally captivated me. The story is compelling and truly haunting. One of my new favorites and I will definitely be re-reading.

I feel like Red Dragon gets the short end of the stick a lot since it'll always be compared with the far superior Silence of the Lambs, which is an impossible standard to live up to. That puts it at a major disadvantage before the story even begins. This isn't helped by the decision to scream Hannibal Lecter's name on the cover and then have him be absent for 95% of the story. I would have loved to read more about his eventual capture by Will Graham in detail, rather then having quick two page summary. To focus on the positives, The Red Dragon is a very sinister and original (at least at the time) killer, and an intriguing foil for FBI Investigator WiIl Graham. There are some tense moments as Graham and hi... More

Thomas Harris' book Red Dragon is the most re-readable novel I've ever read. Utterly sublime, fascinating and clever, it really has few peers. I keep losing my paperback copies of this novel, finally picked up another today and am yet again spellbound. The Silence of the Lambs is a very close second to Red Dragon. If you just want Lecter, "Silence" will give you more of what you want. Will Graham (who Thomas Harris has never returned to) is a more compelling hero than Clarise Starling in my opinion. Graham is a genius like Lector. Starling is really, really smart, but she's never a match for Lecter. She's a (spoiler alert) mate for Lecter. Ignore the movie versions of Red Dragon, read this novel instead and enjoy yourself 10X as much.

It was strange to read a book about Hannibal Lector in the future. Reading felt like he already had a deep past and character detail or maybe it was because of all the movies/shows I have watched. The Hannibal 2001 movie may have been the start of my sociopathic/psychopathic intrigue. Reading the book was no different. Though to me Graham did not get enough stage time, since later in the series Clarice arrives. Graham was just as intriguing as the people he hunted and I would have loved to read more of him. Hannibal is infinitely engrossing. As he is unpredictable, wicked smart, and just as equally horrific in nature. One minute he is helping you, the next orchestrating the deaths of all you love. Honestly I... More

This first look into the story of Will Graham and Hannibal Lector was an interesting journey. The novel is dated, some of the phrasing and descriptions should are no longer considered appropriate in today's age. But that doesn't take away from the fascination the reader gets when Graham and Lector meet. It doesn't pull away from how devastating Dollarhyde's past was. The crimes were horrifying and I could genuinely believe the FBI needed Graham's help in finding the Dragon. Not a bad read all in all.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Genre: Horror Thriller Red Dragon is the first book in the Hannibal Lecter series. It does not concentrate a lot on Lecter though more than introducing him to the reader with some background. The story is more focused on Will Graham (an ex-detective) who has a history with Dr. Lecter and his goal here is to catch the serial killer (Red Dragon) who kills entire families each full moon. ...
