Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was born to Polish parents in Berdychiv (now Ukraine). His early readings in marine literature inspired him to be a sailor. Consequently, he joined the British Merchant Navy in his early twenties and then chose to live as a British citizen in England. His literary career started in his late thirties when he published his first novel AlmayerÕs Folly in 1895. He is viewed as a great prose stylist who combined, when necessary, the elements of his foreignness, his sailing experiences and his humanistic views to create immortal literary masterpieces.
