Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was born to Polish parents in Berdychiv (now Ukraine). His early readings in marine literature inspired him to be a sailor. Consequently, he joined the British Merchant Navy in his early twenties and then chose to live as a British citizen in England. His literary career started in his late thirties when he published his first novel AlmayerÕs Folly in 1895. He is viewed as a great prose stylist who combined, when necessary, the elements of his foreignness, his sailing experiences and his humanistic views to create immortal literary masterpieces. Conrad is regarded as one of the finest writers in English language.
