This is an entertaining collection of histories behind many common sayings 'stolen' from other languages. Two issues; in the Kindle format, most of the wee cartoons that illustrate the text are too wee to read properly without having to enlarge the image, thus rendering them superfluous. Secondly, each entry is followed by a 'qualifying' example of the use of the expression. Most of these I deem unnecessary and many are simplistic and patronising.Apart form that, I did learn a thing or two - !

This is a brilliant book about foreign words and phrases which have found their way into the English language and become part of the linguistic furniture. The explanations have a Cartesian clarity and the examples are often hilarious. To quote one at random: (In flagrante delicto) 'The Petersons had been rather less adventurous in their love-making since they were caught in the bushes in flagrante by the vicar and his cocker spaniel.'

This is a Christmas present so too early to say what the recipient will say but a quick flick through indicates very interesting.
