Experienced and successful in the management and running of shoots of every description and after resisting the pressure of friends for many years, Sir Nickerson has finally put down his knowledge and expertise about shooting, and all that it entails for countryside conservation, so that others can benefit from the lessons he has learned. He has called his book A SHOOTING MAN'S CREED because, for him, shooting has become something of a religion, in the sense that it is far more than just a sport providing personal satisfaction through its challenges, but offers a way of life through the necessity of its disciplines, devotion and adherence to a strict code of behaviour. It makes full use of his unique collection of personal records, covering more than sixty years and provides advice on every aspect of this fast-increasing sport of marksmanship, strategy and etiquette to gun-dogs, poachers, and keepers. Sir Joseph Nickerson, a self-made Lincolnshire farmer who was fired by the possibilities of applying genetics to plant breeding, was so successful at producing new high-yielding varieties of cereals and other crops that he sold it to Shell. Continuing to live in Rothwell, Lincolnshire, he turned his attention to ducks and bred a new variety which dominates the duck market of the world.
